Abstract

Chemical synthesis of gold nanocrystals whose crystal defects and size are controlled will be presented. This synthesis allows studying the influence of crystal defects on plasmonic and vibrational properties of these gold nanocrystals. The obtained nanocrystals exhibit low size distribution that provides access to their self-assemblies into three-dimensional ordered lattices, called nanocrystal superlattices. Vicinal surfaces on nanocrystal superlattices have been observed under specific self-assembly conditions. Moreover, it is possible to obtain gold nanocrystal superlattices with submillimeter size containing only either single or polycrystals and study them by single crystal X-ray diffraction. In this way, it has been possible to correlate the translational and orientational order of gold nanocrystals within the superlattice.
